A talented player herself, Jacqueline created the Piatigorsky Foundation in 1961. The organization soon began sponsoring chess activities on the local, regional, national, and international levels. IM John Donaldson will discuss how Jacqueline’s efforts transformed chess in the United States, supporting chess efforts aimed toward women, youth, and underserved populations; her organization of international grandmaster tournaments; and her assistance of top American players, including Samuel Reshevsky and Bobby Fischer. John Donaldson has served as the Director of the Mechanics' Institute Chess Club of San Francisco since 1998 and worked for Yasser Seirawan's magazine, Inside Chess from 1988 to 2000. He has had held the title of International Master since 1983 and has two norms for the Grandmaster title, but is proudest of captaining the U.S. national team on 15 occasions winning two gold, three silver and four bronze medals. Donaldson, a noted chess historian, has authored over thirty books on the game including a two-volume work on Akiva Rubinstein with International Master Nikolay Minev.
